Press conference to discuss a bill that aims to update mammogram quality assurance

Rep. LaVar Christensen to talk about H.B. 258, Women’s Cancer Screening Notification Amendments, which aims to require facilities that perform screenings or diagnostic mammograms to provide patients with a notification of that report and options for additional cancer screening examinations.

It affects as many as 50 percent of all women. Since 1991, Utah has maintained in statute the Mammography Quality Assurance Act (Utah Code Section 26-21a-203), but we have not updated those protections. Mammogram results reveal whether the patient has dense tissue and if so, the cancer detection results may be clouded and misleading. This legislation would require patient notification and disclosure of dense tissue findings in mammogram reports, including options to obtain additional professionally recognized forms of cancer screening examinations.

Thank you for paying attention to things that are important to all. Having a mammogram is very important to every woman. We should also pay attention to those that perform these X-rays and make sure they are qualified and properly trained.

I support HB258. I am so grateful that Representative Christensen is taking on this sensitive and vitally important bill.
Breast Density is a very important subject matter that the vast majority of women are totally unaware of. 50% of women have it but 95% of women don’t know anything about their breast density. It is vital for women of all ages to know and understand their Dense Breast Tissue.
Dense tissue limits the effectiveness of mammography. Upon notification of dense tissue a woman may choose other screenings that will be more effective for her to detect cancer earlier and make the best informed healthcare choices for herself.

Hope there is tons of support at the press conference. There is a problem that 95% of women know nothing about breast density or that there is such a thing. So what you don’t know may literally kill you.
